Honours and Awards - Annual Report 2006-2007
Honours & Awards Annual Report 2006-07

With the onset of the Scouting Centennial in 2007 the National Honours and Awards committee unveiled a new award recognizing continuing exceptional service to Scouting for registered members across Canada with approximately 2500 awards to be presented from February 2007 to February 2008. So far the committee has evaluated a number of applicants and has bestowed the Commemorative Centennial medal on 36 members including 1 youth member, Ashlyn Field in Thunder Bay, with hope of a number of more awards this fall and winter. Also new this Centennial year was a thank you award developed by Toronto council called the Legacy Profile. Although not recognized as an official Honour by National council it has been a popular way of saying thank you to leaders in different councils.

Awards Ceremony Group Photo - Thunder Bay - 2007    The applications for the CCM have given the committee another tool to allow us to look at Leaders in our Council for other service awards. From information gathered 13 service awards were also bestowed on members of our council. Letters of Commendation were presented to Minetta Kraynyk and Debbie Kaiser. Medals of Good Service were presented to Shane Mason, William Brownlee, Rhonda Rutherford, Grace Mullner and Larry Bieronski. Medals of Merit were presented to Normand Giroux, Debbie Kaiser, Roy Brockelbank, and Steve Bobriwicz. The Silver Acorn, normally the highest award a Scouter can earn without being involved internationally, was bestowed on Olean Jones and Tom Abthorpe. Congratulations to all these award winners.

Also part of our recognizing leaders in certificates for years of service. Any leader having being registered for 10 years receives the Long Service medal. This year we sent out 8 for presentation. These went to Cathy Clement, Wendy Kirby, Kelly McCaw, Kerry Zimmerman, Larry Bieronski, Enico Pucci, David Gallant and Martin Deforest. Over 55% of our leaders have more than 10 years of service in Scouting. 8 Scouters reached milestones of 25 years or more this year. With 25 anniversaries this year were Wally East, Len Godwin, William Towill and Ruth Marvin. Celebrating 30 years were Wilfred Findlay and Tom McGibbom. Celebrating 35 years of service to Scouting were Alexa Woolen and Doug Grainger. This shows that as an organization we are becoming old. This year the long service awards out numbered the Warrants of Appointments for new Scouters by 2 to 1.

It has been a busy year. Again I wish to thank the committee members for all their hard work in evaluating the applications this year and hopefully next year will be as busy.
